Water Projects
Wells, storage tanks, and rainwater catchment — La Planada's solar well serves 120 families.
Doing What's Needed
During the dry season, there are serious shortages of water, leading many families to have to walk to rivers or caves to meet their families' needs. We have two types of water supply projects: rainwater harvesting from roofs into plastic tanks or wells that supply either large plastic water tanks or a community-sized concrete water tank. Here is a photo of a well Servants Hearts Ministries drilled at El Puente.
In 2024, we completed a producing solar-powered well and three 10,000 liter plastic water tanks for La Planada (120 families) and connected it to the village piping system. During the severe 4-month drought in Spring 2024, this system proved to be the only water source for the community. La Planada is the third village in which we have provided water.
In late 2025, we drilled a well in Chinaboquil. The well is now complete, and we are working with the village leadership to define the best plan for a water storage tank system for the community.
Since many communities experience significant water shortages during the dry season, we would like to provide more communities access to water. We are seeking funding to enable this vision.
Wells, tanks, and catchment
The La Planada well is 238 feet deep, producing 11 gpm of fresh water, with a solar pump and three 10,000 liter water storage tanks.
We have also provided the villages of San Simon and El Porvenir with wells. Other projects include water catchment and filtration systems for homes (since there is a surplus of water during the rainy season). A well costs about $8000 - 10,000, large community water tanks about $10,000 - 20,000, and catchment systems for homes between $400 and $700.
Many communities face a severe lack of water during the dry season each year, being forced to walk long distances to polluted rivers, find caves with water pools, or purchase water in larger towns. During the 4-month drought in Spring 2024, temperatures routinely exceeded 100 degrees F.
